They were shown the draft terms in May They complained bitterly, but the Allies did not take any notice of their complaints. Germany had very little choice but to sign the Treaty. When the Treaty terms were announced in June , there was a mixed reaction. The general opinion in Britain was that the terms were fair and should probably have been more severe.
British newspapers suggested that Germany would no longer threaten world peace. Any complaints by the Germans were dismissed as trickery and play-acting. The king came out to meet him at the railway station, which was completely unheard of in British history. Reactions in France were mixed. There were celebrations that the war was definitely over.

The Germans thought they had been tricked and betrayed, and they hated the Treaty. The Germans were also furious about the various terms of the Treaty. Firstly, the Germans did not think that they had caused the war for the Germans, the war was a war of self-defence against Russia, which had mobilised 31 July During the s, the Germans published all their secret documents from , to prove they had tried to stop the war.
Secondly, the Germans hated clause because accepting it gave the Allies the moral right to punish Germany — it validated all the harsh terms of the Treaty. Germany hated the military terms of the Treaty army of ,, only 6 battleships, no submarines or aeroplanes. But even this figure is misleading, since only Moreover, the Germany not only received far more money in U. Yet as noted, from to , Germany, with the help of U. Instead of imposing taxes to pay for the war, they decided to fund it by borrowing.
The effect of this decision was to begin a steady devaluation of the German mark against foreign currencies. Predictably, this caused inflation, and as more money entered circulation, inflation rates increased. Moreover, the claim that hyperinflation led directly to the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazis flies in the face of reality. Only German politicians — both for their own domestic political reasons and as a means to gain international sympathy — chose to interpret Article as unfairly placing blame for the entire war on Germany.
And, as noted, even that was further limited to what the Allies calculated Germany could pay. Yet that claim assumes that the league would have been successful at preventing another world war if the United States had been a member.
In fact, due to serious flaws in its concept, organization and procedure for settling international disputes or stopping aggression, the League of Nations could hardly have prevented predatory nations from doing whatever they wanted, whether or not the United States was a part of it.
